Make this Autumn warm and comforting with the help of Ayurveda
The clocks have changed, the weather is getting colder and we are feeling the need for a hot drink and comforting food. In Ayurveda, this is the time of Vata. The energy which qualities are dry, light, cold, rough and subtle. We experience subtle changes in ourselves and in nature, for example, our skin feels drier due to the wind and cold. You may experience more tiredness and anxiety due to the season transition, time change etc. Thanks to Ayurvedic wisdom there is always a way to balance yourself in any state you are in. Here are 3 simple tips to follow that will help make this season warming and comforting.
1) Give yourself a light oil massage before a shower or bath. Apply Almond or Sesame oil to the body. Make sure to focus on the Vata related areas e.g. kneecaps, lower back, ears and feet. Do be careful when entering the bath or shower because of slippery feet! This 2 min step before showering will do wonders for dry skin and will calm the nervous system.
2) Have a nice cup of tea:
1 Cinnamon bark
6 Green Cardamom pods
1 tsp of Fennel seeds
1 tsp of Ajwain seeds (carom seeds, closely related to caraway seed)
1 quart of water.
Simmer for 10 minutes, strain and serve warm. Drink this through the day. It will improve digestion, clean your GI tract and boost your immunity. Put in some drops of Dr Bach Rescue Remedy to aid with relaxing the body and mind to take in the benefits of tea.
3) 1 hour before bed, put away your electronics and sit on your bed. Try doing some breathing exercises for calming your mind and inducing restful sleep.
Just relax in a crossed leg position or whatever sitting position you find most comfortable where your back does not feel a strain. Breath in and out through your nose and pay attention to your breath for 5 minutes. Before drifting off to sleep reflect upon your day and be thankful for your blessings.
